Operation Buddy Check

Veterans Checking on Veterans

Operation Buddy Check

 No One Stands Alone

Operation Buddy Check was created from loss, but it continues through connection.

Our journey began after the loss of another shipmate in October 2024. That loss reinforced something many veterans already understand: sometimes the person who needs someone the most is also the person least likely to ask.

Operation Buddy Check was initially created by **Claus Cares** around a simple idea—**reach out, check in, and be there for one another.**

Our logo features two hands reaching toward each other and shaking. It represents that connection: one person willing to reach out and another knowing that someone is there.

As Operation Buddy Check began to grow, Veterans Care Project joined Claus Cares as a partner in the mission. That partnership has helped expand the reach of the program, strengthen veteran-focused events, and create more opportunities for veterans to connect with one another throughout Hampton Roads.

## Peer Support. Friendship. Community.

Operation Buddy Check is not intended to replace professional counseling, medical care, or crisis services. At its heart, it is simply veterans supporting veterans through conversation, friendship, shared experiences, and community.

Sometimes that means sitting across the table over a cup of coffee.

Sometimes it means sharing lunch, meeting at a local brewery, attending an event together, or simply having someone nearby who understands.

Claus Cares and Veterans Care Project now work together to support informal gatherings at local coffee houses, restaurants, breweries, and other community locations throughout Hampton Roads.

There is no requirement to tell your story, no expectation that you have all the answers, and no pressure to be anything other than yourself.

Come for a cup of coffee. Stay for the conversation.

## Our Annual Events

Two of the largest expressions of the Operation Buddy Check mission are events we plan to continue annually.

 Hands Across Hampton Roads

**Hands Across Hampton Roads** is our family-focused community event designed to bring veterans, families, nonprofit organizations, community partners, businesses, and neighbors together.

The goal is bigger than simply hosting another event. It is about building relationships before someone reaches a point where they feel alone.

By bringing resources, entertainment, families, veterans, and community organizations into the same space, we create opportunities for people to meet, connect, and learn who is available when help is needed.

The event also reflects the meaning behind the two hands in the Operation Buddy Check logo—reaching out, connecting, and bringing people together.**

 Hold the Line

**Hold the Line** is our benefit concert supporting the mission and continued growth of Operation Buddy Check.

Music has a way of bringing people together who might otherwise never meet. Hold the Line gives veterans, supporters, families, musicians, businesses, and community members an opportunity to stand together in support of veterans and the peer-to-peer connections at the heart of Operation Buddy Check.

The name carries the message behind everything we do:

**When someone is struggling, we hold the line together.**

 Growing Beyond the Table

Coffee and conversation are only the beginning.

As Operation Buddy Check continues to grow, Claus Cares and Veterans Care Project want to create more opportunities for veterans to reconnect with each other and with the community through shared experiences.

Future activities may include boating and fishing trips, museum visits, recreational outings, educational opportunities, community service projects, group excursions, and events developed alongside other nonprofit organizations, veteran-serving agencies, businesses, and community partners.

Not every veteran connects the same way.

Some people will open up over coffee. Others might connect while fishing, working on a project, walking through a museum, listening to music, or simply spending time with people who understand where they have been.

Our goal is to create more of those opportunities.

## Building a Larger Community of Support

Operation Buddy Check may have started with Claus Cares, but the vision has always been bigger than one organization.

The partnership with Veterans Care Project is an important part of that growth, and we also want to work alongside other veteran organizations, nonprofits, businesses, community groups, and individuals who share the belief that no veteran should have to face life's challenges alone.

By working together, we can create more opportunities for veterans to build friendships, discover resources, become involved in their communities, and simply have somewhere to belong.

Veterans Helping Veterans—and a Community Standing Beside Them

Operation Buddy Check is built around veterans, but veterans do not have to carry this mission alone.

We are looking for veterans who want to become part of the community, volunteers who want to help organize activities, businesses willing to host gatherings, organizations interested in partnering, and community members who simply believe that no veteran should feel forgotten.

You do not have to have all the right words.

Sometimes the most important thing you can say is:

**“How are you doing?”**

And then stay long enough to hear the answer.

## Join Operation Buddy Check

Whether you are a veteran looking for connection, someone who wants to support veterans, a local business interested in hosting an event, or an organization interested in partnering with us, there is a place for you in Operation Buddy Check.

Help us reach out.

Help us build connections.

Help us make sure that when one of our brothers or sisters is struggling, they know someone is standing beside them.

 Be a Beacon.

 No One Stands Alone.
